Website design questions for business new to the Internet

The following section is to make you think about the questions we will ask you. Do not worry if you do not have answers to the questions because we at Cogitar Software can help guide you to the design that will reflect your business.

If your business already has a website or its own logos then you might still like to look at these points.

Font type

Is there a font type you like?

As a website primarily contains text it is important to have a font that reflects your business. Some people like clean modern fonts such as Arial, whilst others like historical fonts such as Times New Roman. Some people may like fonts such as Century. Selecting the correct font choice is crucial, as it will have an impact across the entire site - and its design.

Colour

Is there a colour you like?

Colour is a very subjective matter and when it comes to website development this enters a whole new arena of design principles. When you swap the printed form for a display screen, colours become difficult to trade like for like - for example your company may have Silver in its logo. With "silver" the problem is that is that whilst there is a defined colour called "Silver" in the web developers colour palette, it is not going to reproduce like the printed form of Silver. Cogitar Software will show you some of the ways round such problems.

Graphics

Is there a graphic style you like?

As your website may well contain graphics it is again important that you find a style that suits your business.
Often we suggest you keep a scrapbook of magazine adverts etc. The scrapbook is so that you can show Cogitar Software ideas, often it is easier for people to articulate graphic ideas in images rather then text and conversation. If a picture paints a 1000 words - you may need more than a 1000 words to describe a website that is a moving canvas.

How do you define style? - Can you apply it to your website, this car could be
considered a 1950's Style icon for more information please view the style page.

Style

Is there a time-based style you like?

This is usually a difficult question to answer straight off, but if you think about it...
How you answer this can offer Cogitar Software a great insight into your aims and desired look. Sometimes when we speak with a client and ask them if they like a style and quantify it by saying "like the 1950s" or "art Deco - like the 1930s" you may even stay - "something of a 70's feel". We can then look and discuss some of the features you would like on your site.
If you keep a scrapbook as suggested above and think about this question in conjunction with the above points we can help guide you in less time to achieving your desired aim.

Type of site

Where do you want to take your business?

A question we always ask our clients is where do you want to take your site? What do you want to achieve - and what budget do you have to achieve it. Often we offer staged solutions to clients to help move them forward.
Many clients start with a simple website and move on to catalogue systems - then on to e-commerce platforms.
Some of our clients however go straight to e-commerce sites using our catalogue / e-commerce systems.

Website design if you already have a site and logos

If you already have a website and want to move up and on, or already have a business logo, then whilst the above questions are useful for you to think about, there are other questions to consider the answers to aid website development.

Where now?

What lessons have you learnt?

How do you apply it to a new site? In the section above we asked this question, but if you already have a site this question needs to be asked. Often when people purchase websites and software they construct a huge list of "It must do this..." .
The reality is that often after paying for a website and software that "would do that" they find that the function and the feature might only be used once.
We therefore always ask our clients to be honest and actually ask - do I need that feature? Remember its not because we cant do it - its because we want you to think about where you are spending your money. A website is only part of the solution - and you need to think about your marketing budget in its entirety.
